Revitalisation of the Old Cres Core (Pedesatrian Bridge)

Fusion of Traditional landscape and contemporary design

The island of Cres near Rijeka locates in the Adriatic Sea. Following the development of the island, its harbour has become an obstacle for the inhabitants to move to the opposite shore as the area has expanded. When participating in the flagship programme "27 Neighborhood" of Rijeka 2020, the residents identified a bridge connecting the left and right banks of the harbour as "what the island needs now". What kind of bridge would they want to see in a town that reflects its long history? After much internet research and meetings in Japan, two Japanese architects were nominated to design the bridge. After further consultations and a referendum, the bridge design by Tetsuo Kondo was selected. The design of the bridge is modern but still in harmony with the landscape. As well as being a new tourist attraction, the bridge is expected to be a catalyst for younger generations to rediscover the island they live on. Residents are eagerly awaiting its completion, calling it 'Japan's Bridge' which will be the first modern architecture on the island.
