Sibiu International Theatre Festival Online Special Edition: Japanese Season

The first online edition of the theatre festival attracting audiences across the world

At the end of March 2020, festivals around the world sought for their possible activities and announced cancellations and postponements to the following years. Meanwhile, the Sibiu International Theatre Festival was one of the earliest ones to announce that it would be held online.
The festival ran for ten days, starting on June 12 as originally scheduled. The online edition, titled "Empowered," replaced the scheduled program with a selection of works by the companies and artists who participated in the past editions of the festival. In addition, programs including the Theatre Forum and Performing Arts Market were also distributed simultaneously with the distribution of the works. A total of 138 programs made up the festival.
The festival was streamed twice, for the time zone in Romania and in other areas in each, mainly through a special website. The online programs were viewed by audiences in more than 100 countries, got attention from around the world, and presented new possibilities for the Sibiu International Theater Festival itself.
