Zen riddles for the audience
Images of Asia / Yoshi OIDA performance

Aarhus (Denmark)

Yoshi OIDA learned his art in Japan and has long worked in the performing arts in Europe. His performance of "Interrogations" in Aarhus, Denmark, queried the audience much the way that a Zen master poses koan to a student. This fusion of Japanese Zen with modes of expression that evolved in the West gave rise to dialogue that plumbed the depths of the human heart.

Yoshi OIDA

Born in 1933 in Kobe, Yoshi OIDA studied kyogen theater as a child and compiled extensive experience in avant-garde Japanese theater. In 1968 he joined the Peter Brook company and appeared in Brook performances of the Mahabharata and the Tempest. Since 1974 OIDA has led his own group as a performer in European theater. His unique technique that fuses Eastern and Western approaches to the theater has won critical acclaim.
