New possibilities in Japanese drumming unfold in Europe
Images of Asia / YAMATO Japanese drumming group

Aarhus, Copenhagen (Denmark)

Deploying Japanese tradition and drumming in dynamic performances that fascinate audiences throughout the world, YAMATO appeared also in Images of Asia. Their first Denmark performance at the opening ceremony of the history-rich Aarhus Festival as part of the Images of Asia project drew the keen interest of the local crowd that gathered to witness the unnerving drumming of YAMATO thunder through the hall. So popular did YAMATO prove that their subsequent performance, in Copenhagen, was sold out and an additional show had to be hurriedly arranged. Danish audiences were thoroughly captivated by the tremendous energy of a living tradition.

YAMATO
Formed in 1993 in Nara, the cradle of Japanese culture, the Yamato Japanese drumming troupe breathes new life into the traditional instruments from their own bodies and presents energetic and dynamic drumming performances that express the resonant heartbeat, the pulse of life, that results. These Denmark performances marked the conclusion of their eight-month 2003 European tour, which included Austria, Germany and France.
