Support creative activities in artistic culture and spiritual culture even as the globalization proceeds

Report

New Wave from Kyoto University!
"masterminds" symposium

Cultural Capital of Europe Graz 2003, Austria

Organized by Dr Karl Acham, professor of sociology at Karl-Franzens Universitat Graz, the "masterminds" series of international seminars was held throughout the year to discuss globalization from multiple angles.

As multiple cultures become complexly intertwined, the homogenization of the world is subjecting religious, ethical and artistic values to fundamental transformation, and Graz, the regional Austrian city selected as Cultural Capital of Europe, is no exception. Researchers from around the world in sociology, religious studies, philosophy and associated fields gathered in Graz to discuss these values from European and non-European points of view.

Joining them from Japan was Kyoto University professor Dr Tadashi Ogawa. Dr Ogawa's presentation titled "Are there ethical universals in the West and the East?" provided participants with multiple openings onto these themes and is expected to lead to greater understanding of Japanese and other Asian cultures.

Date: 28 April 2003
Venue: Karl-Franzens Universitat Graz

Prof. Dr. Tadashi Ogawa, Kyoto University Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies and Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies
