Born Sedgefield, England, 1949, resident in Liverpool.
Davies studied photography at Trend Polytechnic, the predecessor of Nottingham Trent University. In the 1970s he began producing work on the theme of the English rural landscape and after 1981 began showing work depicting contemporary landscapes undergoing rapid change with the advance of industrialization.
Davies' expansive compositions taken from high vantage points depict such manmade structures as factories, roadways, railways, bridges and power plants mixed in with the land and its natural features. Despite the frequency with which his work depicts nature in the process of destruction, it portrays these shifting, fleeting scenes with elegance. This stately and silent world does not raise its voice in complaint against change, rather it lucidly sets out the facts before our eyes in low-key fashion. As well as showing in exhibitions at museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and the Pompidou in Paris, Davies also undertakes commission work involving architecture and the environment. His work features in many public collections, including those of the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, the Maison europeenne de la photographie in Paris, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
