In order to determine which of the works by the four European photographers working in Saga and Fukushima prefectures in 2005 would be shown in this project, an art director, the photographers, curators from exhibit locales and NPO representatives gathered to make a selection of the work. This was also occasion for the Japanese participants to visit institutes of culture and the arts in European countries to hold discussions and build deeper relationships with their counterparts.

The Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko is a drumming troupe formed in 1982 in Okinawa. The head of their Tokyo office, Mr. Yamashiro, traveled to Europe to discuss their appearance in Greece and on that occasion held a demonstration at the Patras Music Academy. Overwhelmed by the stirring motion and rhythm, the music students quickly opened up and promised to meet again at the performance.

With the objective of deepening understanding and dialog between countries through the total art form known as architecture, this forum has been held four times since 2001. The forum looks at promising young architects and creates opportunities to introduce them to the world through traveling exhibitions and concurrent symposia and lectures that take in each year's Cultural Capital of Europe. The forum is now scheduled to visit Luxembourg (Cultural Capital of Europe 2007), Tokyo, Melbourne and Perth.

Leni-Basso, which has recently achieved impressive success in the West as well as Japan, performs at Patras Cultural Capital of Europe 2006. We are confident that the people of Partas greeted their stylish and urbane expression of the body with fresh wonder and sensation.

Contemporary Dance Performance: Min Tanaka Solo

Leader of the Tokason Dance Troupe as well as dancing solo, Min Tanaka takes many different avenues in his pursuit of his own form of the expression of the body. In addition to this performance, he will also be holding auditions for this joint production with Greek dancers. The two dancers selected visit Tokyo this summer to participate in "Dance Hakusyu 2006," with which Tanaka is involved, and in the international dance collaboration "Rite of Forest".

Fronted by Assistant Professor Mr. Kenji Endo of the Kanazawa College of Art, the Contemporary Artist in Residence in Kanazawa is an exchange and residency program for European contemporary artists launched in 2005. It is held annually as part of the Cultural Capital of Europe. Motoi Yamamoto will participate in the residence program at Patras 2006. He will use several tons of salt to create the installation "Meikyu" (labyrinth).

The revolutionary Japanese drumming troupe of overwhelming power with seven women and four men led by Kaori Asano. Their stunning and heated 2003 performance at the opening ceremony of Cultural Capital of Europe Graz 2003 was broadcast live throughout Europe. Much is expected of their Athens performance as part of this year's Cultural Capital of Europe Patras.

"One◆Piece"

YAMADA Un performs and holds workshops in Japan and overseas as a dancer and choreographer. Her humorous, witty dancing grounded in a casual comportment has earned her an established reputation, and she works across artistic genres in collaborations with musicians and stage choreographies. The reaction of local residents to the long-awaited work "One◆Piece" that she has been invited to perform at Patras 2006 is much anticipated.
