Jazz pianist Yutaka Shiina plays with a wide range of musicians and presents energetic live performances in Japan and overseas. His unique touch and sound, and his original compositions, draw large numbers of listeners. To communicate the appeal of jazz, for some years now Shiina has been holding workshops for musically active children and teenagers and performing in joint concerts with his students. Expanding the range of these activities this year, Shiina takes his program to different parts of Japan.

This exhibit shows of 40 works from the "Mediterranean" series by Mimmo Jodice, the giant of Italian photography. The series consists of work shot by the Neapolitan in the 1980's and 1990's when he turned his eye on his own roots in the Mediterranean. The exhibit explores the world of Mediterranean mythology wafting in serenity and tension, sublimated by Jodice in his own language of representation.

Visiting Japan for discussions in advance of the Cork Children's Chorus' participation in the International Music Festival for Youth in July, mezzo-soprano and Cork Children's Chorus director Sonya Keogh held a choral workshop for children in each of the towns she visited. The exercises and vocalization instruction she offered energized the children's expressions and voices in no time at all.
The students who participated in these workshops will host homestays and appear in joint performances for the music festival in July.

Workshops with Cork Children's Chorus Musical Director John O'Brien

John O'Brien, musical director of the Cork Children's Chorus, visiting Japan for discussions as did Sonya Keogh, held a workshop for the adult mixed chorus Green Echo active in the city of Kirishima. He paced them through a range of training from exercises and vocalization to lyric expression. Their reunion at the music festival in July is one to look forward to.

This was the fifth EU-Japan Symposium, held jointly with European cultural institutions each year in the Kansai region to promote mutual understanding between Japan and the member countries of the European Union. This year's symposium engaged in an exchange of opinions comparing the culture and situation of child education and image of the family in the respective countries as seen through their picture books and on the themes of intercultural understanding and foreign-language learning by children through the picture books of other countries. Audience-participation programs in addition to the symposium included picture book readings and workshops for children offered by panelists Schoonooghe and Berner that we are confident provided further opportunity for deeper understanding.

This is the second year of the Contemporary Artist in Residence in Kanazawa program of exchange between Japan and Europe fronted by Assistant Professor Kenji Endo of the Kanazawa College of Art. It is conducted each year between the city of Kanazawa and that year's Cultural Capital of Europe. This year five artists will be working in residence in Kanazawa, showing their work in exhibits and lecturing at the Kanazawa College of Art.
