Born Bristol, England, 1971. Currently resident in London.
Introduced to photography by his father at an early age, Gill started out as a self-taught photographer. As a student, he assisted with such tasks as family portraits and restoring old photographs at a local photo studio. He then went on to study photography in the foundational course at Filton College in Bristol and, after a stint at Magnum Photo, became an independent photographer.
Gill's work has a unique perspective on people and their activity in public venues. "Audio Portraits" takes as its subjects people listening to music through earphones on the street, and in "Lost" he turns his lens on people wandering the streets. Meanwhile, "Invisible" depicts laborers engaged in road or railway construction. Gill notes the contradiction that while their fluorescent work clothes are meant to make them stand out, in fact they have become a part of the routine urban scenery so that they go largely unnoticed.
With a eye suffused with warm humor, Gill precisely captures the personal qualities behind private facial expressions and casual, unconscious actions glimpsed in people in public places. Blending the allure of documentary photography with concepts born of minor curiosity and a sharp sense for scanning the times and society, Gill is opening up new fields of expression.
