A Literary Guidebook to Japan

　


An anthology of contemporary German literature about Japan. All of the writers have visited Japan in the last 20 years. The collection will present, how Japan is seen today from the perspective of German writers. Until now a German anthology about Japan was never published, also Japan and the Japanese culture influenced and impressed German writers since the time western people had access to Japan.


Beside that the anthology reflects also, what "traveling" and "space" means at the present time, where the concept of globalization and mobile humanity seems to change dramatically our perception of time and space.


A documentation of the encounter of Japan and Europe. The collection is a valuable material for specialists in German, Literary and Cultural studies.


A transnational point of view. Texts from writers as Tawada, Monikova and Said call into question, what "national identity" really means: all of them are not of German origin, but write in German. Furui Yoshikichi, Hiraide Takashi and Kenzaburo give the whole collection a very nice balance. Their texts are the appropriate "frame" for the collection in the sense of foiling the western or "German" image.
