Ozato Primary and Middle School Kuroshima Djembe Club

Ozato Primary and Middle School

It is already 11 years since djembe first came to Ozato Primary and Middle School, and the older students have passed on to their successors five songs: Jore, Yankarimakuru, Moribayasa, Dhiripa and Kuku. We practice djembe in music class and during afternoon breaks.

At the International Music Festival for Youth last year we played with middle school students from throughout Mishima-mura. We also play at school festivals, local events and ceremonies to welcome and see off visitors. We hope to spread the djembe beat to more and more people and then around the world.

Katadomari Primary and Middle School Kuroshima Djembe Club

Katadomari Primary and Middle School

The students of Katadomari Primary and Middle School take tremendous pleasure in performing djembe. We play whenever they can find time - during breaks, after school, on holidays. Now even the teachers join in our practices. Sometimes we have the principal of the djembe school to the island to give us technical instruction. We like to take on new songs, and there is no better feeling than when we all hit spot on the rhythm together. At cultural festivals, celebrations for community elders and other social occasions, we play the songs that we have mastered in practice. When a visitor comes to the island, we sometimes perform at the port in the spirit of welcome. The children of Katadomari are experiencing the joy of music through the traditional African instrument djembe.
