Europe Today 2004-2005

In-between

A 14-volume series
of groundbreaking photo collections by 13 photographers,
covering the 25 countries of the EU
Available starting June 2005!

The Europe of today which is never portrayed in the mass media

May 2004 saw a major breakthrough in the building of a greater Europe. Ten countries, including eight former communist countries, joined the European Union (EU), bringing the total number of countries to 25. In the midst of the hope and confusion resulting from this integration, Europe now finds itself in a period of significant change.

However, in spite of this change, Europe continues to be a place that is near and yet far away from us. It has become easy to travel to Europe, and we now have access to a lot of current information, yet Europe is still not close enough. Whether in terms of distance or awareness, our ability to perceive this change firsthand remains distant.

For the "In-between" project, we had 13 photographers, each with a sharp and unfailing eye, actually visit these 25 countries in Europe as "in-betweens" linking us with Europe. While there these photographers each used their own distinct eye to capture the various aspects of this change. These photos were taken between July 2004 and February 2005.

Fading memories, new sights, the people adapting to this time of change, things that will never change, atmosphere - the subject matter captured by each photographer are simply things that caught each photographer's attention. Yet this is the reason that each of these photos tells its own story, and holds a more personal experience. In an attempt to preserve these stories, we will publish the scenes that caught the attention of each of these 13 photographers in separate volumes.

Along with these 13 photo collections, we will also publish a separate companion guide. This guide will be another way of learning about the 25 European countries photographed, mixing photos that we had each photographer take based on their own interpretation of a common theme.

It is our hope that these photo collections will become a means of which we can meet the Europe of today.

The EU-Japan Fest Japan Committee has been engaged in the European Eyes on Japan/Japan Today photography project since 1999. In this capacity, the Committee has brought to Japan spirited photographers from the member countries of the European Union to capture through the eyes of outsiders those aspects of contemporary Japan that its own people tend to overlook out of over-familiarity.
The 2004 expansion of the EU was occasion for launching the parallel Europe Today project to capture contemporary Europe through the eyes of Japanese photographers as it embarks on a new future. The In-between series of photography collections takes these initiatives as its point of departure.
