Born 1966 in Kavala, Greece, and currently resident in Thessaloniki.
After completing studies at the University of Thessaloniki Department of Physical Education in 1987, Kalafatis studied photography at the Philadelphia Art Institute in the United States. He has shown his work at many solo and group exhibitions in Greece and around Europe, including the Photosynkyria festival of photography in Thessaloniki in 2000 and 2004, and at the "Greek Photography of the 20th Century" show at the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography in 2004. Also in 2004, he published Journal, a collection of photographs taken over the course of four years on the Greek island of Skopelos.
This collection depicts the lives of the people he met on the island and the vibrant colors of its natural scenery. The distinctive Kalafatis world that emerges from these 180 photographs of the seasons and a wide range of subjects apprises viewers of a sensation of having wandered into a space between reality and fantasy. What emerges is the richness concealed in life and death, in trivial objects, and also overlooked facts that are present with us in our everyday routines of here and now.
