Born 1961 in Dublin, Ireland and currently resident there.
Took a doctorate in chemistry at University College Dublin. At present working as a lecturer in Photography at . Won the European Publishers Award for Photography in 2001 for ‘Innocent Landscapes’ a work depicting in relief the darkness that lies behind quiet, unassuming scenery where persons ‘disappeared’ by the Irish Republican Army (IRA) were murdered and buried during the 1970's and early 1980's.
Farrell confronts contemporary society on his own terms. He turns his attention to matters ignored by the mass media, takes time plotting his way and revisits almost obsessively the places that draw him. Farrell is not interested in making a record of events as they are or in drawing clear conclusions. He seeks to use photography to make the people who view his work aware of ideas that cannot be solely expressed in words; his work is layered in time and memory and in elements of significance, which go beyond the tangible. His quest is a series of what he terms as ‘Elusive Moments’ What emerges is none other than an aspect of ourselves, living in our uncertain contemporary times.
