Dara McGrath

Born 1970 in Limerick, Ireland, currently resident in Cork, Ireland.
Studied photography and obtained a Master's in visual design at the Dun Laoighaire Institute of Art, Design & Technology. In 1999 McGrath was awarded the Pepenieres Europeennes pour Jeunes Artistesin Luxembourg and in 2003 the AIB Art Prize in Ireland. In recent years he has enjoyed increasing recognition as an important figure in the next generation of Irish photographers.
McGrath engages with a variety of themes through contemporary scenery in "Between the Lines", in which he focused on the borders of Europe that have spun out its history while confronting the condition of their contiguity, and in "By the Way", a record of the chaning appearance of the spreading new Irish motorway network even as it intrudes on the countryside. In capturing the image of nature while retaining also the incongruities and queer harmony that emerges from evidence of human intervention, his work shows us landscapes entirely different in their expression from what we are accustomed to. McGrath's keen eye show that unknown discovies lie concealed even in the scenery that unfolds aimlessly before our very eyes.
