Mathieu Bernard-Reymond

Born in 1976 in Gap, France. Now living in Montreux, Switzerland.
After graduating from the Institute of Political Studies, Grenoble/France, he studied photography at the School of Applied Arts, Vevey /Switzerland. He is a talented young artist who was awarded the Montre Hermes prize for photography in 2001 and la Fondation CCF pour la Photographie in 2003. Mathieu's gaze doesn't fall on the big events and dramatic occurrences but rather on the occurrences in everyday spaces with which we are not normally concerned. His work, which incidentally makes full use of computers, floats a trace of the "existence" of a reconstructed human image together with a familiar view, and as this combined image comes and goes between reality and imagination, fundamental questions are thrown up at the photograph.
Many of us probably unthinkingly believe that a photograph is a representation of the reality at the time the photograph was taken.
However, what Mathieu pursues is the reality as a photograph, not the actual reality. A camera is not merely a recording device. So, at the same time the appeal of a photograph is also that it is not simply the recording of a particular moment. Mathieu's sensitivity and creativity have opened up the possibility of a new form of photographic expression.
