Overviews and close-ups on EU-Japan Fest programs and the cultural climate

In connection with the photography exhibition "European Eyes on Japan vol. 8" held at the Saga Prefectural Museum of Fine Art on 2-25 February 2007, the EU-Japan Fest Japan Committee co-sponsored an essay contest with the local newspaper Saga Shimbun.Visitors to the exhibition were to express how the work shown in it affected them, and the contest received 191 submissions from people aged 9 to 80 years old. These two essays were awarded the top honor in the contest.

Mr. Hisao Saito and Mr. Iki Morita of the non-profit organization The Darkroom International visited Ireland in July to confer with Dara McGrath,
the European Eyes on Japan/Japan Today vol. 7 photographer who worked with their organization on a workshop. Saito reports below.

The 2nd International Music Festival for Youth was held at 4 venues in Kagoshima Prefecture in July 2005. Mrs. Inoue, director of Wakayama Arts and Culture Support Society (wacss), visited Mishima-mura and Matsuyama-cho. A report from her as a Wakayama's point of view.

The "KEEP IN TOUCH: Positions in Japanese Photography" project at the Cultural Capital of Europe Graz in Austria featured both an exhibit collected the work of Japanese photographers and symposia with photography curators and researchers active at the forefront in Japan. A young curator attending the symposia reports on the image of Japanese photography that emerges from the works collected.
